In the Spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.

Margaret Atwood

She captures the heart of people in her work and that to me is the most important part of a photograph.

Welcome to your Spring Mini Session

How do you usually feel having photographs taken with your family? Perhaps uncomfortable, in a place you don’t enjoy or a bit nervous about connecting with that photographer you only just met? You long for those natural images of you and your family, and you dread sitting and posing saying ‘cheese’ through forced grins. I get it, these previous photo experiences have perhaps made you feel a bit anxious to have a photo shoot, but I promise there is better way. You deserve to have this quality time to capture you and your family just as you are, in a beautiful place where your kids can go explore and you can just relax. Welcome to Lifestyle photography, and what my Spring Mini Sessions are all about. These seasonal sessions are meant to be relaxed and enjoyable, whilst capturing the magic in the inbetween moments, and that my friend, is my speciality.

Can you imagine carving out a small portion of your day, where you feel completely relaxed and then immortilising that moment in an image?

How Your Mini Session Starts

Once you are all booked in, I will contact you with a time, confirm our shoot location which you will detail in the book form, and I will also send you a little style guide to help prepare you for your photo session. We will meet at a convenient spot close the location and then you and your family will then be able to just roam free and enjoy the experience whilst we get to know each other as I start snapping away. From the second we meet, I will be taking photographs but I aim to be as unobtrusive as possible, so you won’t even notice I am taking photographs at times.

During our Time Together

We will spend the time we have together getting to know each other, playing some games and styling you into positions that are both comfortable but will create scroll stopping imagery. We only have a limited time to get to know each other, so it is importrant for me to be able to watch how you interact together and use a variety of techniques to create images. Sometimes I will be up close with my camera, and sometimes I will be further away and just let you be. I will continue to talk you throughout the process and capture those inbetween moments that you might not think are anything…but trust me, these are always golden and build up the story of who you are.

Wrapping Up

Once our photo session is finished, you will leave feeling pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable the session was. I always take far too many images so you will have lots of lovely moments to choose from. All the best images from our session will be available for you to view in a private digital gallery, this will be emailed to you within two weeks to pick your favourites.

If you want a photographer that will make you feel comfortable but also make you laugh, Zephy is the person.

Nicola Simpson

Hey there, my name is Zephy and I am a published photographer with over 6 years in the photography industry as a wedding, lifestyle and portrait photographer. I have a First Class Honours Degree in Commercial Photography and I specialise in working with teenagers and children. I have researched and studied children for a variety of photography projects including sibling relationships, adolescence and representation in contemporary portraiture. One of my biggest achievements to date was having three of my best portraits from my photography projects ‘Siblings’ and ‘Adolescence’ printed in large format prints. There images were exhibited in London, and were as tall as me (I am 5’10 so they weren’t exactly small!). I live in Arbroath Scotland with my partner and two girls. We love foraging and baking at home, and our favourite thing to do is a getaway in the campervan to visit the mountains where you might catch us swimming in a loch or two. Photography is my life and I am rarely without my camera in hand, I regularly capture lifestyle photography of my family in my personal work and dabble in film photography too.

FAQ

Q. How long does the Mini Session last?

A. 20 minutes, this time will fly by but trust me from the second we are together I will be shooting away so you actually get more than 20 and I always take far too many photographs!

Q. How many people can I have on the session?

A. To get the most out of these Spring Mini Sessions, I recommend families of 5 and under. If you have a bigger family please get in touch to discuss your needs.

Q. What should I wear?

A. When you book I will send you a style guide so that you will feel comfortable but know the best colours and materials to make the most out of your shoot.

Q. I live outside of Arbroath, is this ok?

A. Yes, but these shoots must be within 20 minutes of Arbroath. Please arrive 10 minutes before your photo shoot to allow the session to run as smoothly as possible.

Q. What if it rains?

A. I like to shoot in all weather! The photo shoot will still go ahead unless it’s raining very heavily. If the weather forecast says it will be really bad weather, I will reschedule for a better day.

Q. I feel nervous in front of the camera, how can you help me to feel more comfortable?

A. From the second you arrive I will be friendly and approachable, and doing everything possible to put you all at ease. I want this experience to be a pleasant one for everyone as this is the only way to make great photographs!

Q. What if my kids don’t behave?

A. I have over 10 years experience working with children in different environments, and I enjoy getting to know them and what they like to do. I encourage children to be left to do their own thing and find the games with them to get the photographs that you hope for.

Q. One of my family members is neurodiverse, will this session be ok for them?

A. I have worked with many neurodiverse children and I am neurodiverse myself, this means I can empathise, encourage and go with what your family needs to make the session work you.

Remember, you deserve to have a photo session where you leave feeling like you just went for a walk with a friend

Been holding onto this one for a few weeks and I’m not sure why as it’s a recent favourite of mine. I love the vintage vibes ✌🏻🌼 This weekend you’ll find me foraging spring greens 🍃 I just love a simple portrait of her sometimes 🥰 ❤️ It’s all about plants in our house right now, and I loved this detail image of lilies that Jane sent to me for our collab this week. I just loved the beautiful greens and textures, we don’t have lilies at ours but we have plenty of greenery to photograph with! It creates the most lovely earthy shapes and bokeh…🥰🌿 Taking the time to stop and appreciate the little things and using my camera to document them. Sometimes it’s all about sharing that ‘epic shot’ on here, and we’re too afraid to share our thoughts or images that won’t be liked as much in fear of not being good enough. What happened to sharing what you love? What happened to sharing what has meaning to you personally? I get it, we all feel like we need to get better, be better, do better…but right now in this moment, I am looking back at what I have achieved and it’s enough. Here’s your permission to stop, appreciate and capture something little and share it because you can and it’s enough 🌼 Alex and I stayed in a beautiful wood in the Highlands this weekend which was covered in some of the most beautiful wild flowers. We spent our time walking through the woods and picking the edible wild flowers to see what they tasted like. I picked a few to bring home with me for the girls, this year I’m determined to include flowers in all my recipes 🌸🌼 When your mum is a photographer trying to take cute photographs of you in the blossoms, but you are 2 years old and give no f**ks 😂 so all I could do was shoot through the blossom trees in her general direction. Zoom in to see her cute little face away in her own little zone… 🌸 I guess the only thing you can do to your dirty toes when you’re a toddler, is stick daisies in them 😂🌼 Had a great time at my first @arbroathmarket last weekend! It’s been lovely getting to know more of what this community has to offer and making some new friends. Hazel has been going to these art sessions at @art_attack_angus for the last couple of weeks so it was nice to bump into their stall at the market where the girls got busy playing with sand. And look what they got to decorating? My favourite! 🌈#myraindowdreamland
